Hiking
There are many places to go hiking in the Musanze district. Whether you prefer a short hike up Bisoke or to see Dian Fossey’s tomb, or a two-day expedition up Karisimbi with an experienced guide, the Volcanoes National Park offers several opportunities for the outdoor adventure seeker. Please see the Volcanoes National Park page for excursions and prices.
If you are looking for just a simple afternoon hike pick any hill and you will surely be welcomed along your way by the local villagers. After all, this is the “Land of a Thousand Hills” and good hiking can be found all around you.
Tennis
The Ibirunga Tennis Club offers private and group lessons at an affordable price. It is possible to join the club and pay a nominal fee to play on your own. Contact Coach Tony Musengimana at +25.078.855.14.13 for more information.
Birdwatching
There are over 180 species of birds located within the Volcanoes National Park. For more information about visiting the park please see the Park Activities and Prices page.
Cycling
There are a few bike shops in Musanze that occasionally sell a whole bike, but it is likely to be extremely expensive and not the best quality. If you wish to go biking while you are staying or living in the district we suggest that you bring a bike with you from your home country. We understand that this is not always an easy feat, but unfortunately, there is no where to rent a bike in Musanze at this time. You might be able to find a quality bike in Kigali.
Considering that you have found a quality bike, Musanze offers the perfect terrain for cycling. Whether you stay on the newly paved roads or take a detour down a rocky dirt path, the rolling hills of this district’s countryside are bound to keep you in shape and entertained!
Fishing
Lake Ruhondo is Musanze’s main body of water.
Soccer
Musanze has a stadium located near the center of town, just off the main Kigali-Ruhengeri road, where many clubs and small local teams come together to play soccer.
